Family Nurse Practitioner located in Portland, OR

About Sara Nelson, FNP

Sara is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner with over 10 years of experience as an Emergency Room and ICU Nurse. She has rich experience with end-stage liver disease, GI illness, hematologic disorders, cancer, and stroke. She was called to primary care after seeing patients at the end of their chronic illness journeys, wanting to impact patients before needing the hospital. She began her own wellness journey as a patient with Pohala and is grateful to be a provider here.

She enjoys partnering with patients to find what works best for their current health journey. Offering alternative and complementary medicine is a great passion. Her philosophy of healing is that eastern and western medicine are both essential for optimum healing. She believes in cutting edge science and incorporating ancient wisdom with the recognition that all healing modalities have their benefits and limits. An avid lover of learning, she is ever-expanding her natural medicine knowledge. Food as medicine, movement, and herbalism are her preferred foundations. She also enjoys supporting brain health and autoimmune disease.

She is an advocate for diverse human experiences, believing our differences are the spice of life! She understands the unique needs that come along with alternative relationship styles and happily practices polyamory with her two wonderful long-term partners.

Outside of the clinic, you can find her cooking and gardening food from around the world, enjoying decaf coffee in shops around Portland, and yoga. Outdoors, she tries to stay a little wild with rock climbing, ski mountaineering, and canyoneering. Mostly, she loves a good hike and sitting still on occasion.
