Meet Our Pediatric Care Experts: Dr. Macayla Richards and Dr. Natasha McDougal

At Pohala, we believe that caring for children is about more than just treating symptoms—it’s about nurturing their growth, supporting their families, and building a foundation for lifelong wellness. That’s why we’re thrilled to spotlight two of our exceptional naturopathic physicians, Dr. Macayla Richards and Dr. Natasha McDougal, who bring their expertise, compassion, and personalized approach to pediatric care. These two are thick as thieves, having started their journey together since the very first day of orientation at naturopathic medical school, and have continued their journey at Pohala. Whether it’s a newborn’s first checkup or a teenager navigating mental health challenges, these doctors are here to guide families every step of the way.

Dr. Macayla Richards: A Heart for Healing and Connection
Dr. Macayla Richards has always known she wanted to make a difference in healthcare. From dreaming of being a veterinarian or psychologist as a child, she found her true calling as a naturopathic physician. With a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from the National University of Natural Medicine—plus a certificate in Naturopathic Obstetrics and Midwifery—Dr. Macayla combines her love of food, science, and human connection into her practice.

Pediatrics is a cornerstone of her work. She thrives on building strong, trusting relationships with her young patients and their families, using a holistic toolkit that includes nutrition, psychology, herbs, and pharmaceuticals in evidence-based scientific methods to promote health and healing. Dr. Macayla has extensive training in pediatric care, with a special focus on conditions involving both mind and body, including mental health challenges such as gender dysphoria, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. I love teaching kids and their parents about how the human body and brain works, and how even when it 'goes wrong', it's still right, just a new kind of right! I love working with people to find methods and strategies that work for them,” she says. “Every body is unique, and so should the way in which we nurture them!”

A proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, Dr. Macayla also brings her passion for inclusive care to her practice, ensuring all families feel seen and supported. She strongly supports trauma-informed care and Health at Every Size models for care, and is an advocate for LGBTQ+ kids, teens, and adults. When she’s not in the clinic, you might find her cozied up with her wife and dogs, spinning yarn, playing videogames, or diving into a game of D&D—always with a mug of tea in hand and a cozy sweater.

Together, Dr. Macayla and Dr. Natasha bring a wealth of expertise and a shared commitment to pediatric care that’s as compassionate as it is comprehensive.
