Teens, Nutrition, and Acne by Vera Vos Nurse Practitioner in Portland, Oregon

Pohala Family Nurse Practitioner, Vera Vos talks about the article “What can you eat for clearer skin? The best and worse foods for acne,” from the Food Revolution Network.

Stuck with Acne? Not Exactly!

The woes of adolescence! Exactly during the time of our lives when we feel the least secure about our appearance is also the time we are most likely to have problems with acne. Is acne a normal and expected rite of passage for teens? In the US 79-95% of adolescents will struggle with an acne outbreak at some point during their teenage years. Many endure the affliction for years and end up with scarring in adulthood.

Unfortunately, we are not necessarily out of the woods once we reach legal drinking age.In the US, almost half of all adult women and about 1/3 of adult men have acne, about 1/2 in each group defined their acne as moderate to severe, while the other half had mild outbreaks. A teenage only thing, it is not!

So, this must be the result of our industrialized food and toxic environment, right? Well, yes and no. Though there are traditional cultures in the world where acne is virtually unknown, many other cultures, with much cleaner food and environments than ours, still have a fair percentage of adolescents that experience acne. The abrupt change in hormones during this time period is a trigger. But, there are fewer teens affected and those that are, almost always have mild outbreaks. And, virtually everyone outgrows acne in adulthood. .

The bottom line is, of course there are things in our modern, industrialized food and personal products world, that makes acne worse and more common not only in teens but also in adults! Read the attached article  to learn what specific things you can do to improve or even cure acne

Environmental Detox Tips for Your Home in Portland Oregon

Spring Cleaning

Despite our crazy Winter weather,❄️ Spring 🌷🌿 is around the corner and Pohala is welcoming this event with our:

Spring Cleanse: Nutritional Detox and Reboot Class.

This class is filled but that doesn’t mean we can’t share some detox tips with everyone. If you’re not in the class, let us know, and, if there is enough interest we may do another one.

Vera Vos NP will speak on Environmental Toxins:

She tells us:
‘Often, the big question is, why detox? A big reason is to decrease the burden of harmful chemicals in our bodies. But, aren’t there laws that ensure clean and safe water, air, food, etc? If only that were true. There are more than 80,000 registered chemicals in use. About 1600 of these chemicals have been tested for carcinogenicity by the EPA. In 2016 then President Obama amended the 1976 Toxic Substance Control Act which will now require the EPA to study the not yet tested chemicals for safety. Unfortunately, they are only required to study 20 different chemicals at a time and testing must be completed within 7 years. How quickly EPA moves through the testing is definitely dependent on funding and the political climate. So, while the federal government makes it’s ponderous way through 80,000 (minus 1600 already done) chemicals, it’s up to us to educate ourselves regarding what potential toxins we may be coming into contact with.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a non-profit American activist group that specializes in research and advocacy in, among other things, toxic chemicals. Check out their website for an extensive guide to the most toxin free products for your home and personal use.  Our homes may be our sanctuary but the air inside can be 2-5 times more polluted than the air outside. There are guides for everything from mattresses to cleaning products to lightbulbs and much more. Here’s to spring cleaning!

Whether you are attending our class you can schedule your personal Nutritional Cleanse consult. Vera Vos NP and Lisa Del Alba ND accepting new patients.

Here is to YOU!!!! The more you care for yourself the better the World Can BE. Healing can happen.

Food and the Sacred by Julie Foster, Nurse Practitioner at Pohala Clinic

🍎FOOD and the SACRED🍑

The HUMAN of the future will approach plants that are of use to them consciously; not as now when one reflects on what yields the best substances for one’s body; one will then have a vital relationship to every plant, for they will know what it is has absorbed, and what passes from food to them. Eating will not be to one as a means occupation, but an act consummated with SOUL and SPIRIT for one will know that everything they eat is the external form of something SPIRITUAL 💮

In our immediate age, when HUMANS know little about the vital inward relations between themselves and the world, all kinds of substitutes are made use of. Why have the Initiates of all ages urged people to say grace before eating? The grace should be a token of the recognition that, together with the food, something SPIRITUAL enters into HUMAN.

Rudolf Steiner – GA 105 –Universe, Earth and Man – Lecture III – Stuttgart, 6th August 1908

(I changed  the gender pronoun MAN to HUMAN- as Steiner meant this with his original use of the word man.)
